Irish blues rock legend Rory Gallagher’s famed 1961 Fender Stratocaster guitar, a cornerstone of his illustrious career, has been acquired at auction for over £889,000 and is set to become a national treasure. Live Nation Gaiety Ltd. purchased the iconic instrument with the express intention of donating it to the National Museum of Ireland, ensuring its preservation and public accessibility.

Gallagher, celebrated as one of history’s most influential guitarists, acquired this very Fender Stratocaster in 1963 for a mere £100. This guitar remained his constant companion throughout his groundbreaking career, becoming synonymous with his electrifying performances and distinctive sound. The auction, conducted by Bonhams, featured 94 lots from the Rory Gallagher estate, encompassing a range of guitars, amplifiers, and personal items, collectively realizing £2.3 million. The 1961 Stratocaster was the star attraction, exceeding its reserve price and ultimately reaching a final price, inclusive of premium, of £889,400.
Claire Tole-Moir, Head of Bonhams Popular Culture department, expressed her delight at the auction’s success, noting the global interest in Rory Gallagher’s legacy. Dónal Gallagher, Rory’s brother and former manager, conveyed the family’s gratitude for the outpouring of respect and affection for Rory. He highlighted the poignant decision to part with the collection, expressing solace that these instruments will now travel, sharing Rory’s music and memory with the world, much like Rory himself did.
Born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Rory Gallagher’s musical journey began in Cork. He rose to prominence with his band Taste in the late 1960s and established himself as a formidable solo artist. Famously, when Jimi Hendrix was questioned about being the greatest guitarist, he reportedly redirected the compliment to Rory Gallagher, underscoring Gallagher’s profound influence within the guitar community. With over 30 million albums sold worldwide, Gallagher’s impact on music is undeniable.
Catherine Martin, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, lauded the acquisition and donation, emphasizing the significance of ensuring the iconic guitar’s permanent return to Ireland. The agreement guarantees that this legendary Stratocaster will be preserved by the state and made accessible for public viewing, allowing Rory Gallagher’s admirers globally to connect with a tangible piece of his musical heritage at the National Museum of Ireland.
