Diving into the iconic sounds of Boston, I recently explored “More Than a Feeling” using a surprisingly capable entry-level Moukey acoustic guitar from Donner. Initially, I planned to use a 12-string, but this Donner acoustic, sent over by the company, really impressed me, especially considering its affordable price. Mic’d up, it delivered a fantastic tone, held its tuning well, and the neck felt comfortable and playable – a significant step up from my first guitar! For beginners on the hunt for quality instruments without breaking the bank, Donner’s back-to-school deals are definitely worth checking out.
What truly captivated me in “More Than a Feeling” was Tom Scholz’s incredible lead guitar work. His feel and vibrato are simply outstanding, and his studio mastery is undeniable. His guitar tone is just phenomenal, and he’s clearly a player to deeply appreciate and learn from.
When tackling the verses, my picking approach varies slightly from Scholz’s, and it’s all about finding what feels natural to you. I opted for strict alternate picking (down-up-down-up), which felt comfortable and consistent for this song’s rhythm. If you’re newer to chord picking, economy picking—picking in the direction of your next chord—can be a great alternative to explore for smoother transitions.
Vibrato is absolutely essential to nail the emotion in this track. Perhaps a dedicated video on vibrato techniques would be beneficial? My personal vibrato technique involves a twisting wrist motion, almost like turning a doorknob, rather than relying solely on finger strength. This song emphasizes the feel and expressiveness you get from bends and vibrato much more than outright speed or shredding. It’s about capturing that signature Boston sound.
Are there any other classic Boston anthems you’d like to see guitar tabs for? Or even broader, what other epic rock classics are on your list? Have I covered all the essential Boston tracks already? Let me know your suggestions!
