The poignant celebration of Berry’s life commenced with a public viewing at The Pageant, a renowned music club nestled in his hometown of St. Louis – a venue where Berry himself frequently graced the stage. Read aloud by US Rep Lacy Clay, Clinton’s letter recalled Berry’s performances at both of his presidential inaugurations. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Clinton’s words, calling Berry “one of America’s greatest rock and roll pioneers.” Clinton’s tribute continued, “He captivated audiences around the world. His music spoke to the hopes and dreams we all had in common. Me and Hillary grew up listening to him.”
Gene Simmons of the legendary rock band Kiss also acknowledged Berry’s profound influence. For Simmons, and countless others, Chuck Berry was more than just a musician; he was a foundational influence, shaping the very essence of rock and roll music as we know it.
