Warr Guitar vs. Chapman Stick: Unveiling the Key Differences

Many musicians exploring touch-style instruments often inquire about the distinction between the Warr Guitar and the Chapman Stick. While both instruments share similarities in tuning and the touch-style playing method, significant differences set them apart. Having experience with both, including owning an original Chapman Stick alongside my Warr Guitars, allows for a clear comparison of these unique instruments.

The primary divergences between the Warr Guitar and the Chapman Stick lie in their body construction and electronic configurations. Warr Guitars are equipped with dual output jacks, separating the signals for the melody and bass sides. In contrast, the Chapman Stick typically utilizes a stereo cable, adaptable for both stereo and mono output configurations.

Ergonomically, the Warr Guitar adopts a familiar guitar-like approach, employing a guitar strap which allows for versatile positioning, from vertical to a more horizontal playing angle. The Chapman Stick, however, is designed to clip onto the player’s belt and relies on an arm strap to maintain its secure, vertical playing position.

Regarding pickups, Stick Enterprises instruments, including the Chapman Stick, feature a range of pickups designed specifically by the company. My Chapman Stick, for example, incorporates an active Block pickup. Historically, Warr Guitars utilized Bartolini pickups, as seen in older models. However, current Warr Guitars now feature custom pickups meticulously designed by Pete Hanewinckel, the instrument’s builder, to optimize their unique sonic characteristics.

From a player’s perspective, I personally appreciate the grounded feel provided by the Warr Guitar’s body. It contributes to a sense of enhanced sustain that, in my experience, is less pronounced with the Chapman Stick. Conversely, the Chapman Stick offers a notable advantage in portability, fitting conveniently into a slim bag for easy transportation.
