Recently, while jamming with a local band, an insightful observation from a young, exceptionally talented bassist underscored this very point. This musician, influenced by luminaries like Carol Kaye, questioned why I, a pedal steel player, seemed to have drifted away from country music, the genre seemingly most aligned with the instrument. Her unspoken implication was clear: the steel guitar’s voice is far richer and more adaptable than genre constraints might suggest.
My personal experience strongly reinforces this belief. I find immense enjoyment and satisfaction in playing steel guitar across genres often considered unconventional for the instrument – pop, rock, show tunes, standards, and even contemporary country. Interestingly, it’s often younger audiences who express the most curiosity and enthusiasm when they encounter my pedal steel and MSA SuperSlide guitars. Their interest isn’t fleeting; they genuinely inquire about the instrument, demonstrating a refreshing openness unburdened by genre limitations.

However, relying solely on the musical tastes of past generations, where artists like Buck Owens reigned supreme, risks alienating younger musicians and audiences who are naturally drawn to contemporary sounds.
