Experience the captivating melodies of the 17th century with the delicate and nuanced sounds of the Baroque guitar, sometimes referred to for its refined qualities as a “Pianoforte Guitar” of its time. This unique recital will transport you back to the 1600s, showcasing exquisite Spanish and European dances and compositions performed on a meticulously crafted replica of a Stradivari instrument.
The performance will feature the celebrated guitarist Rafael Vivanco, accompanied by special guest singer Lisa Zane and percussionist Blake Jiracek, promising a rich and immersive musical journey.
Rafael Vivanco’s profound connection with the guitar began in Peru, where he commenced his classical guitar studies at the age of 11 under the tutelage of maestro Alonso Acosta. His early talent was quickly recognized, leading to performances at numerous venues and youth festivals across Peru throughout his formative years. Continuing his musical journey, Mr. Vivanco moved to Vancouver, Canada, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in classical guitar performance from the University of British Columbia (UBC), studying with the esteemed Michael Strutt. At UBC, his musical horizons expanded to include the lute and the baroque guitar, learning from the renowned Ray Nurse. He further honed his skills in Baroque performance under the guidance of both Ray Nurse and harpsichordist Doreen Oke, participating in performances of Baroque solo and chamber music with the Collegium Musicum (Early Music Ensembles). The baroque guitar he will be playing in this recital is a testament to historical craftsmanship, being a replica made by Ray Nurse of an original Antonio Stradivari instrument from Cremona, dated 1679.
In 2008, Mr. Vivanco earned his Master’s degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago, where he studied guitar with Denis Azabagic. He has also benefited from master classes with world-renowned guitarists including Eduardo Fernandez, Fabio Zanon, Jason Vieaux, Paul Henry, and Alexander Dunn, enriching his artistic interpretation and technical prowess. Following his graduation, his exceptional talent was recognized and supported by Jim Sherry, a prominent guitar importer and publisher of Guitarra magazine and associate of Andres Segovia, who sponsored Mr. Vivanco for performances and teaching engagements across the United States.
Mr. Vivanco’s dedication to his art led to an artistic residency at the Cervantes Institute of Chicago in 2017. He has become a recurring and welcomed performer at numerous prestigious music festivals, such as the Chicago Latino Music Festival, the Chicago Flamenco Festival, the Milwaukee International Guitar Festival, the Chicago Latin American Guitar Festival, and the Music in Film Festival. His captivating live performances have also been broadcast on public radio, reaching a wide audience. Known for his versatility and collaborative spirit, he has shared the stage with lyric sopranos, flamenco singers, chanteuses, and pop stars. Beyond performance, Mr. Vivanco is also a composer, having created and recorded music for a film that has received international acclaim, winning best feature film awards at both the Milan Gold Awards and the Florence Film Awards.
