What is Convenience Picking? Swim Meet Picking for Guitarists

Many guitarists begin by solely using downstrokes, and later progress to alternate picking (down-up-down-up). While both are valuable, “convenience picking,” also known as “economic picking” or “directional picking,” is a game-changer for smooth and efficient playing.

Think of it like a swimmer in a lap pool. Instead of stopping and awkwardly turning at the wall, a swimmer fluidly reverses direction before hitting the wall to continue swimming back. Convenience picking applies this same principle to your guitar picking: always pick in the direction of the next string you intend to play.

Let’s illustrate this with the opening G chord section of “Time of Your Life”:

Initially, try playing this G chord segment using only downstrokes. You’ll likely find it challenging to maintain smoothness and speed. Alternate picking (down-up strokes) can also feel a bit clunky here:

Notice how alternate picking in this example feels awkward, particularly between the open D string and the D note on the B string.

Convenience picking provides a much more natural and fluid approach:

By using convenience picking, you maintain momentum and direction, making the transitions between strings seamless and the overall passage easier to play smoothly and quickly. This technique also translates beautifully to fingerstyle guitar, where thumb strokes function as downstrokes and finger strokes as upstrokes.

“Time of Your Life” Song Structure: Verse Breakdown

“Time of Your Life” follows a simple verse structure that repeats throughout the song. Each verse consists of six lines, built around a core chord progression. Understanding this structure is key to mastering the song:

  • Lines 1 & 2 (Introduction & Interlude): Two measures of G, followed by one measure of Cadd9 and one of D. This progression acts as both the introduction and an interlude between verses.
  • Lines 3 & 4: One measure each of Em, D, Cadd9, and G.
  • Line 5: Four measures alternating between Em and G.
  • Line 6 (Interlude): One measure of Em, one of D, and then a repeat of lines 1 & 2 to transition to the next verse.

Let’s break down each section and apply convenience picking to learn “Time of Your Life” step-by-step.

Learning “Time of Your Life” Guitar Tabs with Convenience Picking: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Lines 1 & 2: The G – Cadd9 – D Progression (Intro & Interlude)

This is the foundational progression of “Time of Your Life.” We’ll focus on using convenience picking to navigate these chords smoothly.

The picking pattern here is consistent:

  • Downstroke: Root note of the chord (G or D string)
  • Downstroke: D string or G string (depending on the chord)
  • Upstroke: D note at the 3rd fret of the B string
  • Upstroke: Open G string
  • Downstroke: D string
  • Upstroke: G string

With practice, this pattern becomes second nature across all the chords in the song.

Ring Finger Endurance Tip: You’ll notice that the tab often involves holding down the D note at the 3rd fret of the B string throughout much of the song. This is excellent practice for building ring finger strength and stamina! You can also use your pinky finger if that feels more comfortable.

Chord Voicing for Smooth Transitions: For the G chord, try fretting the B note at the 2nd fret of the A string. This voicing (index finger on 2nd fret A, middle finger on 3rd fret low E, ring finger on 3rd fret B) makes the transition to Cadd9 seamless. To move to Cadd9, simply keep your ring finger anchored on the B string and shift your index and middle fingers down one string set (index finger to 2nd fret D, middle finger to 3rd fret A).

Moving from Cadd9 to D involves lifting your middle finger slightly and shifting your index finger to the 2nd fret of the G string. Focus on accuracy over speed initially, and speed will develop with repetition.

2. Lines 3 & 4: Em – D – Cadd9 – G Progression

This section introduces a slight variation, creating a descending bass line. We’ll use Em7 (keeping that 3rd fret B string note held down).

Instead of starting the Em chord with the open low E string as in the original recording, we’re using the E note at the 2nd fret of the D string (hence Em7). This creates a descending bass line: E (Em7) – D (D) – C (Cadd9) – G (G). This subtle change adds depth and interest while maintaining the consistent picking pattern.

3. Line 5: Em – G Alternation

This line provides a rhythmic variation using just Em and G chords.

Here, you’ll alternate between Em and G chords, maintaining the same convenience picking pattern. This section is excellent for practicing chord changes while keeping the picking consistent.

Liner Notes: The Story Behind “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”

Interestingly, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” was written by Billie Joe Armstrong way back in 1990! However, it didn’t quite fit Green Day’s punk rock sound at the time. It wasn’t until 1993, during the Dookie sessions, that he presented it to the band. Still, it felt out of place amongst tracks like “Basket Case” and “Welcome to Paradise.”

Four years later, when Green Day aimed for a more mature and song-focused direction with Nimrod, “Good Riddance” resurfaced. Producer Rob Cavallo’s suggestion to add strings proved to be the magic touch. The song became a massive hit, reaching #2 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks and the Australian Singles Chart, proving that sometimes, the best songs are worth waiting for.
