Jet JPB-300-SG-R: A Great Value P Bass Guitar – Initial Review

Just picked up the Jet JPB-300-SG-R bass guitar and I’m immediately impressed! Snagged this beauty for £340 from Stompbox on eBay, thanks to a timely 10% off voucher. For anyone looking for a quality Bass Guitar P Bass on a budget, this could be a serious contender.

First impressions are fantastic. The fit and finish are surprisingly high-end for the price point. It’s wonderfully lightweight, striking that perfect balance – substantial enough to feel solid, but not so heavy that neck dive becomes an issue. The roasted body and neck are not just visually appealing; they contribute to a resonance that you can really feel. This bass feels “alive” in your hands, and the unplugged tone hints at the funky sounds to come when amplified. Playing through the scale, I noticed no dead spots at all. Every note rings out true and clear, which is crucial for a reliable p bass guitar. The tuners are another pleasant surprise – they feel robust and operate smoothly, offering precise and stable tuning. And you can’t go wrong with a simple, functional bridge on a P Bass, and this one is definitely up to par, solid and well-made.

Regarding the pickups, I’m not entirely sure if they are ceramic or alnico, but honestly, I’m already really happy with the sound they produce. They deliver that classic p bass punch and growl that you expect.

There are only two minor things that aren’t quite to my personal taste:

Firstly, the tortoiseshell pickguard. It’s perfectly fine, but I have a parchment spray job planned to give it a more vintage vibe.

Secondly, while the fretwork itself is impeccable – flawlessly smooth and polished to a mirror sheen – I can feel the ends of the frets just a little more than I’d ideally like. There are absolutely no sharp fret ends sticking out, it’s purely down to the angle. I’m nitpicking here, and it’s likely because I’m so accustomed to playing older basses where the frets have been worn down over decades of playing, resulting in a softer, more rounded feel.

I’ve already got a chrome bridge cover ready to install – essential for me as it provides the perfect anchor point for my muting foam. And a set of TI flatwound strings are on standby, ready to be fitted to complete the transformation into my ideal p bass.

I wanted to share these early thoughts as I haven’t seen much discussion about the Jet P bass model online yet. Having been impressed by the positive buzz around the Jet J bass guitars, I decided to take the plunge with this bass guitar p bass and I’m certainly not disappointed. It seems like this one is following in the footsteps of its J Bass sibling in offering incredible value and quality.

Expect a more detailed review next week after I’ve had more time to put it through its paces!
