Growing up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Chris Martin’s early exposure to the family enterprise was through visits to his grandfather, Christian Frederick Martin III, and summer jobs at the factory. His path into the family business wasn’t immediate; while studying at UCLA in Los Angeles, he gained valuable experience at Westwood Music, where he built a classical guitar and gained insights into the retail side of the music industry. However, the pull of the family legacy was strong. After a year in Los Angeles, Chris returned to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, to immerse himself in the guitar factory. There, he deepened his understanding of Martin guitar design and construction, working across various departments and mastering the intricacies of guitar making. His increasing involvement led to roles as assistant to the President and subsequently as vice president of marketing, preparing him for the leadership role he would soon assume. The passing of C. F. Martin III in 1986 marked a turning point, with the 30-year-old Chris Martin stepping up to become the Chairman of C. F. Martin & Co.

Inheriting a company with a 189-year history, Chris Martin strategically revitalized the brand by refocusing on its foundational strengths: steel-string acoustic guitars and strings. His decade-long dedication to this strategic shift proved transformative, propelling the company to new business milestones and reaffirming its global reputation for producing top-tier instruments. Martin guitars have always benefited from strong relationships with musicians, and Chris Martin has continued to nurture these collaborations with artists and brand ambassadors across diverse musical genres. This commitment has broadened Martin’s appeal, especially amidst the resurgence of Americana and singer-songwriter music, which has significantly expanded the company’s fanbase. In recent years, Martin Guitar has also effectively embraced the digital age, fostering a thriving online community of musicians and players who engage with the brand virtually, further amplifying the reach and influence of Martin guitars.

“The current acoustic guitar boom – and indeed the ukulele boom – are exciting periods that I’ve been fortunate to witness several times during my tenure with Martin,” Chris Martin remarks. “This marks the third occasion in my time with the company where the acoustic guitar has become the instrument of choice in popular music. We are ideally positioned and prepared to lead as the preferred guitar for singer-songwriters seeking the finest instruments to express their artistic vision.”

Chris Martin’s dedication extends beyond the factory and into community engagement. He is recognized as a prominent philanthropist in the Lehigh Valley, actively supporting local initiatives. Martin Guitar also demonstrates corporate responsibility by championing environmental sustainability and addressing critical issues within the broader guitar industry, distinguishing itself as a leader in ethical and sustainable practices.

Looking to the future, Chris Martin is optimistic, particularly about the enduring family legacy. His daughter, Claire Frances Martin, represents the seventh generation of the Martin family in America, igniting hopes that she might one day continue the family tradition of guiding the company that bears their name and ensuring the future of Martin guitars for generations to come.
