When C. B. Gitty unveiled the G-Bass 2-string Bass Kit, it resonated deeply with musicians who embrace simplicity and innovation. For those captivated by the “less-is-more” approach to music, the Two String Bass Guitar presents a unique and powerful instrument. Delving into this minimalist world reveals a vibrant community of bassists who craft incredible sounds with just two strings. Here are five standout artists who have mastered the art of the two-string bass.
Morphine: The Sultry Sound of Two Strings
Emerging in the 1990s, Morphine carved out a distinctive niche with their self-described “implied grunge” sound. This power trio, fronted by the late Mark Sandman, delivered sultry, low-rock music that defied conventional guitar-centric genres. Sandman’s weapon of choice was a pawnshop Premier bass, modified with just two bass strings and characterized by exceptionally high action. His unique approach shaped Morphine’s signature sound, proving that complexity isn’t always necessary for depth and groove.
Their iconic song “Cure For Pain,” from the album of the same name, exemplifies Morphine’s minimalist yet captivating style. It’s remarkable to consider this track was released over two decades ago and still sounds as fresh and innovative today.
The Presidents of the United States of America: Post-Grunge Pioneers with a Twist
The Presidents of the United States of America stormed the mid-90s music scene with a playful and unconventional setup. Rejecting standard bass guitars, they opted for modified electric guitars strung with bass strings. Chris Ballew, the lead singer, wielded a 2-string guitar/bass hybrid he dubbed the “basitar,” while guitarist Dave Dederer played a 3-string “guitbass.” Both instruments were tuned to Open C#, positioning them within the baritone guitar range but delivering a surprisingly full low end. Their hit song “Peaches” perfectly showcases their catchy melodies and the unique sonic texture created by these modified instruments.
D.A.D.: Danish Rock Giants and Their 2-String Bass Obsession
Hailing from Denmark, D.A.D. stands as one of their biggest rock exports, largely thanks to the thunderous 2-string bass work of Stig Pedersen. Pedersen’s journey began on a traditional 4-string bass, but he quickly realized he primarily utilized only two strings. This revelation led him down a path of commissioning some of the most visually striking and sonically powerful custom 2-string basses ever conceived. In live performances, Pedersen is known for his energetic stage presence and his arsenal of outrageous basses, including a massive 2-string acrylic bass, as seen in many live videos.
Alien Knife Fight: Austin’s Explosive Duo Fronted by a 2-String Bassist
From the vibrant music scene of Austin, Texas, Alien Knife Fight is a dynamic duo spearheaded by singer and bassist Monique Ortiz. Discovered early in her career by Mark Sandman of Morphine, Ortiz has a rich musical history, including stints in notable bands like Bourbon Princess and A.K.A.C.O.D. She is celebrated for her mastery of both fretless bass and the 2-string slide bass. In contrast to Sandman’s jazzy and mellow basslines, Ortiz injects a raw, punk-infused grind into her 2-string playing, creating a powerful and distinctive sound.
Jug Fusion: Embracing the 2-String Bass in a DIY Spirit
Dipping into personal history, Jug Fusion was my own musical project! In our track “X-Ray Spex,” I experimented with a 2-string bass pushed through a cranked-up amplifier, layering it with a 3-string cigar box guitar. While “X-Ray Spex” remains a hidden gem, rarely performed live, it was a thrilling exploration in the studio. This track embodies the experimental and raw energy that can be achieved with a two string bass guitar and a creative approach to instrumentation.
