The Key to Great Beginner Guitar Tabs
Beginner guitar tabs need to strike a perfect balance. They must be accessible for new players, but also musically rewarding and enjoyable to play. It’s all about finding riffs that are easy to learn without sacrificing that awesome guitar sound we all love.
Finding tabs that meet these criteria can be challenging, so we’ve curated this list of 20 fantastic riffs to make your learning journey easier and more fun. Let’s get started!
1. Beginner Guitar Tabs – ‘Beat It’ by Michael Jackson
This is a top choice for beginner guitar tabs! The riff from ‘Beat It’ is instantly recognizable, incredibly cool, and surprisingly beginner-friendly. It utilizes the Minor Pentatonic scale, a fundamental scale for guitarists, and delivers a fantastic sound.

Tips for Mastering This Guitar Tab
- Practice Slowly: Start at a slow tempo and focus on accuracy. Speed comes with time and repetition. Practicing slowly and correctly is the most effective way to build muscle memory and ensure you learn the riff properly from the start.
- String Skipping: The jump from the A string to the G string requires skipping the D string, which can be tricky at first. Keep an eye on your picking hand and the strings as you make this transition to ensure accuracy.
- Isolate the Jump: Practice moving specifically between the A and G strings to get comfortable with the string skip. This targeted practice will make the full riff easier to learn.
- Picking Direction: Pay attention to your picking direction (upstrokes and downstrokes). For instance, when moving from the G string to the D string, an upstroke might feel more natural as it aligns with the direction you need to move your pick. Efficient picking technique will improve your speed and fluidity.

Playing Notes for This Guitar Tab
The main challenge with this riff is figuring out the best fingering. I usually start with my index finger (1st finger) on the 7th fret, then stretch up to the 10th fret with my pinky finger. After that, I mostly use my index finger for the rest of the riff.
However, if you’re completely new to guitar, you can definitely play it using just one finger! Experiment with both methods and see which feels most comfortable for you.

Jack White famously used a Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal (among other effects) to create the signature sound of ‘Seven Nation Army’. If you want to replicate that iconic fuzz, we’ve linked to a similar pedal below:

Notes on Playing This Guitar Tab
- Master the 2nd Fret to Open A String Transition: The trickiest part of this riff is moving smoothly between the 2nd fret and the open A string. Practice this transition specifically to improve your fluidity and make the riff sound seamless.
Remember, with any riff, focusing on practicing the parts you find challenging is key to improvement. Even if it feels difficult initially, consistent practice will build the necessary muscle memory.

Guitar Tab Playing Notes for ‘Day Tripper’
As always, the golden rule: Practice it SLOWLY. Get it right. Gradually increase the speed. Practicing slowly and correctly is the foundation for building solid muscle memory.
There are two main elements of this riff that beginners might find tricky:
- String Accuracy: The first part involves moving between strings, requiring precise picking accuracy. When you first learn this riff, focus on playing it very SLOWLY to ensure each note rings out clearly.
- Finger Stretch: The transition from the 2nd fret on the A string to the 4th fret on the D string can be a bit of a stretch for beginner fingers. Take your time, relax your hand, and gradually work on this stretch.
You might need to adjust your wrist position slightly, moving it forwards or backwards to make this riff comfortable to play. Ensure your forearm is relaxed and free to move. (Remember, playing chords and riffs involves your whole arm, not just your fingers!)
