Applying a headstock decal to your guitar can add a professional touch or personalize your instrument. This guide provides a step-by-step process to ensure a smooth and bubble-free application for your Guitar Headstock decal.
First, submerge your decal in water for about 30 to 60 seconds. This allows the film to loosen from the backing paper, making it ready for application. It’s crucial not to separate the film from the backing just yet. Using tweezers, carefully lift both the decal and backing paper from the water. Position it precisely on the guitar headstock where you intend to apply it.
Gently press down on the decal film while carefully sliding out the backing paper using your tweezers. The decal should now be adhering to the guitar headstock surface. At this stage, there will likely be some water around and underneath the decal. This is beneficial as it allows you to carefully reposition the decal until it is perfectly aligned. If you find the decal isn’t sliding easily, adding a tiny drop or two of water around the decal will help it “float” and become easier to maneuver into the correct position on the guitar headstock.
Once positioned, use a piece of kitchen towel to carefully wick away the majority of the water. Then, using a fresh, dry piece of towel, gently dab the decal to press out and absorb any remaining water. Exercise caution during this step, as it’s easy to accidentally shift the decal out of place or even tear the delicate decal film.
After ensuring the decal is dry, flat, and free of wrinkles, it’s best to let it sit overnight. This waiting period ensures any trace amounts of residual water fully evaporate before proceeding to the next step: applying clear coats of lacquer to seal and protect the decal on the guitar headstock.
When applying lacquer, it’s critically important that the initial coats are exceptionally light. Applying heavy coats immediately can damage the decal, causing wrinkles or imperfections. Instead, aim to “mist” the lacquer onto the headstock. Hold the spray can or gun further away from the neck than usual to achieve a very thin, misted coat. Apply one mist coat, wait for about half an hour, and then apply another light mist coat. Don’t be concerned if the surface appears slightly “pebbly” initially; this texture will smooth out as subsequent coats are applied. These light coats are essential for properly sealing the guitar headstock decal without causing damage, setting the stage for a professional and durable finish.
