I recently had a frustrating experience with Guitar Center that completely changed where I buy my music equipment. Like many musicians, Guitar Center used to be my go-to store, but a recent return issue has pushed me to take my business elsewhere, specifically to Front End Audio.
My problem started when I tried to return a Universal Audio (UAD) Apollo Twin DUO interface. From the outset, the Guitar Center employees seemed strangely biased against UAD products. Before I even mentioned a return, several staff members tried to dissuade me from buying an Apollo altogether, demonstrating a surprising lack of knowledge about the product line. They couldn’t differentiate between the DUO and QUAD versions, even mistakenly believing a “Twin” model was necessarily a DUO. This lack of expertise was concerning, but the real issue arose with the return.
Despite having proof that I was within my rights to return the Apollo Twin DUO, Guitar Center initially refused. I had to spend an hour arguing my case, even involving UAD support and the store manager to clarify their own return policy. The entire process was unnecessarily stressful and time-consuming. The only reason they finally processed my return was, ironically, because I was simultaneously purchasing a higher-end Apollo Twin QUAD. It felt like they were only accommodating me because of a larger sale, not out of good customer service practice.
This negative experience stands in stark contrast to my experience with Front End Audio. After vowing to never shop at Guitar Center again, I turned to Front End Audio, and the difference was night and day. Their customer service has been consistently excellent. They offer fast, free delivery and, surprisingly, no sales tax, which is a significant saving. Recently, they even had a minor issue with my order, but they proactively apologized and offered a substantial discount without me even needing to complain.
Front End Audio’s website, https://www.frontendaudio.com/, has become my new destination for music gear. If you value good customer service, knowledgeable staff, and a hassle-free shopping experience, I highly recommend considering alternatives to Guitar Center, like Front End Audio. My experience has shown me that there are retailers out there who truly prioritize their customers.
